POPPET

A fantastical slip-stream that slowly twists into a terrifying gothic horror.

Margaret (13), an intrepid girl scout is trapped in a strange, Victorian bedroom as the mysterious homemaker Catherine (30) sews a hand-made doll together that slowly takes control of her mind. As Margaret pieces together that her life is in danger, Catherine’s disposition turns from hospitable to hostile.

POPPET is a female-centric, gothic horror about the adventure of a young girl, Margaret, trying to overcome impossibly fantastical odds akin to Pan’s Labyrinth and The Haunting of Hill House. She must overcome her fears and accept help from unlikely places in order to escape the house that so desperately wants her to stay.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

This film is a short-to-feature project. The scene that plays out in our short is an adaptation of a scene which will take place in the feature: Margaret has been trapped in a barren room, and her captor, Catherine, looks to transform her and trap her soul inside of a doll. It’s the perfect scene to encapsulate the overall storytelling, look, feel, and thematic discussions of the feature. It acts as a microcosmic version of the feature’s larger story; Margaret is trapped in Catherine’s snare, and needs to escape from her supernatural abilities.

Our short takes place in a total of three rooms: The Bedroom, Catherine's Sewing Room, and Room of Dolls. All of our sets will be richly decorated with ornate detail befitting the Victorian era, and lit with harsh, chiaroscuro lighting for a haunting, gothic aesthetic. It will be shot in anamorphic, with wide lenses to emphasize how alone Margaret really is within the space. Sound and music will be threaded into the short, subtly at first, with more emphasis on creating an atmosphere of fear and tension the more Margaret loses her mind in the room. As she starts to lose autonomy, and the room starts to reflect her new reality, the music will reflect Margaret’s state of mind through that process.

The world of Poppet is of a grim, gothic reality hiding under our very noses; one built upon the themes of family, childhood innocence, and motherhood. It tells an emotionally gripping tale that leans on the psychological aspects of horror to help fuel the suspense. Will she discover the mysteries of the dolls in time in order to escape?

OUR VILLAIN
AND HERO

CATHERINE, our villain, and MARGARET, our hero, are diametric opposites and yet reflect each others' underlying natures and desires. Margaret is an intrepid, modern girl scout being raised by a single father after her mother passed away; while Catherine is the lovelorn ghost of a woman from the late 19th Century who lost her daughter to sickness.

Visually, the entire short film revolves around Catherine attempting to make Margaret more in her image - the end goal being to turn her into a doll for her long-lost daughter. Catherine seeks to impose the restraints which she felt in life on Margaret. Meanwhile, Margaret is scrappy and modern - wearing outdoor hiking gear as she fancies herself an explorer. She carries around a compass from her father, and a cell phone which does not seem to work in this mysterious place. While Margaret is first tantalized by Catherine's gifts, she soon begins to fight back when she realizes the extent to which Catherine seeks to change her. This back and forth struggle is the center of our story - Catherine drenched in a ghostly white and blood red accents to reflect her true nature beneath the beauty, while Margaret represents the mystery and adventure of life and nature with deep greens accented by earthy tones and yellow to bring out her youth and naivety.
